St Peter’s Church
We recently worked on a renovated Church in Ipswich and found that a combination of systems - wire-free, air sampling and beam detectors - covered the differing needs of the building.
St Peter’s Church, in Ipswich town centre, was a disused, 14th century church, much in need of renovation. This interesting building, once used as a mariner’s church, had become redundant, and was falling into disrepair.
It has now been given a new lease of life, thanks to a lottery grant awarded to a local fund-raising charity, and further assistance from the local council and various church restoration bodies.
It is planned for the centre to be open daily to visitors, and should prove to be a major interest to local and international visitors alike.
A suitable fire alarm solution that would be sympathetic to the nature of the building was required. WFP was employed to work with the building services consultants, to design, install and commission a radio fire detection and air sampling solution to meet the risk requirements of the site.
With a building such as this, the design process had to minimise any structural damage, therefore an engineered solution was used, combining a radio fire detection and alarm, in the easy to access areas, and, due to the height of the roof in the main body of the church, an air sampling system within the apex of the roof. A lower area to the rear of the building was covered, by using a reflective self aligning beam detector.
This application saw both wire-free and air sampling products, working in harmony and used to great advantage. The benefit of the air sampling system will be apparent once the first maintenance of the system is required, as there will be no costly access necessary in order for it to be fully maintained.
